Research gallery

Hypercard in the World (2015) was our second spatial computing system, designed around blessing real objects in the world and putting programs on them.

It was preceded by Room OS (2015).

Things made in the system include:

Bigboard (2015) is the visible implementation of the system itself.

The Research gallery (2015) is a laserable poster of group projects that anyone can add to.

In the Dynamic Library (2015) books can be lasered and seen all at once.

The Seeing Spaces dynamic poster (2015) can be lasered to navigate the video.

The Serengeti (2015) is an active diorama. Lasered animals make sounds.

The Movie-map (2015) is another video in the form of a laserable poster.

Laser painting (2015) on the wall.

Minecraft lasers (2015) allows audience participation during a movie screening.

Ten games were made during the Laser game jam (2015).

Especially noteworthy games are Laser Socks (2015) and Mole Tank (2015).

Attempting Deep Work (2015) was another laser-participatory movie screening.

A computing system for dynamic spatial media (2015) summarizes the system and describes the initial stages of moving toward the next one.

At CDG, the email list was the primary way in which the group shared prototypes, discussed ideas, and documented projects.

This naturally led to a number of projects, of varying levels of seriousness, around physically representing the email archive itself.

The Research gallery (2015) represented key emails as sticky labels on a poster. The labels could be lasered to inspect the project.

Robert printed out all our emails as Email receipts (2015), and attempted to affix them to their subject matter.

Bret made a huge Email poster (2015).

Then the Email binder (2015).

The Email microservice (2016) allowed us to link to emails from other emails or from physical barcodes.

As the group cohered around Realtalk in 2017, the email list became less of a primary mode of communication. It resumed a primary role after the group fragmented due to COVID in 2020.

This very Dynamicland archive (2024) uses emails as “primary source” documentation.

Room OS (2015) was our first spatial computing environment.

It grew out of making the Research gallery (2015), a poster of group projects that could be lasered to bring up details.

The first "Hello world"-like application in the system was Bouncy balls (2015).

Tile files (2015) was an early idea for spatializing the programs themselves.

The past is always with us (2015) displayed the room's view of itself.

In the Dynamic Library (2015), we could laser-browse through books.

The urge to improve the library led to our second spatial computing environment, Hypercard in the World (2015), and development continued from there.
