I was going to try a “serious” prototype with a tapering parameterization

It ended up a bit underwhelming, but was worth doing.

Where yours truly left off, we had video columns that maintained their spatial orientation while changing temporal resolution

I made a simple “peek-a-boo” UI to get into higher temporal resolution under the mouse.

Here’s a video with one level of subdivisions, and another with two.

I am learning more and more about how columns work (the vertical lines are inspired by some Egyptian hieroglyphics that Bret and I stumbled across in our bookshelf). Something feels very elemental/essential in the study of “flow.” There are certainly more tweaks this multi-scale version could have (smooth scaling of frames, animation under the mouse, &c), but my reaction to this is that homogenous scale is more comprehensible.
