I keep trying to figure out how to make video and audio media more tangible, and one idea is to physically represent time in the third dimension.
When I first saw the subject line of this email, it made me think of the “grids on a plane” that I recently noticed, and how much it resembles a low-fidelity version of what I keep imagining for 3-D video.
Here’s some video of the airplane entertainment system in action. Perhaps the ideal interface was already created (and is almost gone)… film.
Then again,
look how far DJ software has gone to preserve the tactile touch of vinyl with the enormous benefits of digital media. Maybe there is an equivalent for visual media (though I don’t know that the love of film comes nearly as much from its physical interface).
